Auditions

Each year The Green Tones lose members due to graduation, sometimes the occasional school transfer, and in rare circumstances, someone may just disappear off the face of the Earth. When these situations present themselves, we need fresh talent to fill in those missing voices.

In most cases, the audition process will occur at the beginning of every Fall semester, and in necessary situations, at the beginning of the Spring semester. This process includes simple music tests to help us determine what voices are best for improving the overall group sound that The Green Tones strive for. They include four simple tests:

Range Test
This is just a fancy way of seeing how high and low you can sing so that we can determine what voice part you fit in.

Tonal Memory
We will play a few chords and just have you sing back what you hear to determine how easy you pick up notes.

Sight-Reading
OH NOOOO! Trust us, it's not that bad. We just want to determine what level of music reading you are currently at. Don't worry. Not being able to read music does not mean that you wont make it into the group.

Solo
After you have finished with all of those fancy tests you will have a chance to show us what you can do as a soloist. Pick a song that really shows of your own unique style and why your voice is different from all the other singers coming to audition. You may be asking what kind of song should I sing? Well, we are a contemporary group, so the majority of our songs do have a more modern style to them, so start there. If all else fails, sing something that is currently on the radio. We do ask that classical music be avoided.

Once the initial auditions are done, we will select certain people for callbacks. Attending callbacks are necessary in order to become a Green Tone and brings you that much closer to becoming a member. Remember, the Green Tones are all about being different than any thing you have ever seen, so personality is key and will help us to remember you if you are yourself during your audition. So let it all out at auditions.
